Uganda: Refugees Who Became U.S. Diplomats
From Uganda to the service of the United States.
Idi Amin
Idi Amin seized power in Uganda in 1971. His regime killed tens of thousands of Ugandans, and estimates of the death toll run far higher.
The 1972 expulsion
In August 1972 Amin ordered the expulsion of Uganda's Asian community, most of them of Indian and Pakistani descent, giving them ninety days to leave. Tens of thousands left for Britain, India, Canada, the United States, and elsewhere, many with almost nothing.
