Tu Dang was born in Vietnam and came to the United States as a refugee with her mother. She grew up in San Rafael, California.
After serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mauritania, she joined the Department of State in 2006. As a Foreign Affairs Officer in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, she worked on worker rights and child labor in Africa.
