Two of the people who have led the Department of State arrived in the United States after fleeing persecution in Europe. Henry Kissinger fled Nazi Germany at fifteen and became the 56th Secretary of State. Madeleine Albright came as an eleven-year-old refugee from Communist Czechoslovakia and became the 64th, the first woman to hold the office.
