Omar Cardentey was born in Cuba. He and his family received refugee status from the United States when he was three years old.

He joined the Foreign Service in 2009 as a public diplomacy officer and served in Ukraine, Iraq, the Philippines, and Djibouti, on the Counter-ISIL and Haiti earthquake task forces in Washington, and as Deputy Public Affairs Officer in The Hague.
