George Landau left Vienna in 1938 and spent three years in Colombia before reaching the United States in 1941. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum lists him among Holocaust survivors.

He joined the Foreign Service in 1957 and served as U.S. Ambassador to Paraguay, Chile, and Venezuela.
