Della Herrmann came to the United States as a refugee fleeing the Iranian revolution. Her family settled in Alexandria, Virginia, and she learned English during the hostage crisis.
The attacks of September 11, 2001, led her to the Foreign Service. As a political officer she has served in Amman, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, and Washington.
