Sudan and South Sudan: Refugees Who Became U.S. Diplomats

From Sudan and South Sudan to the service of the United States.

The Lost Boys

During Sudan's second civil war, which began in 1983, thousands of children from the south were separated from their families and walked hundreds of miles to camps in Ethiopia and later Kenya. They became known as the Lost Boys of Sudan. Around 2000 and 2001, the United States resettled several thousand of them in cities across the country.

Independence

South Sudan became independent in 2011. Some of the Lost Boys went on to serve both their old country and their new one.
