Hungary: Refugees Who Became U.S. Diplomats
From Hungary to the service of the United States.
The 1956 revolution
In October 1956 Hungarians rose against Soviet control. Soviet tanks crushed the revolution within weeks. Around 200,000 people fled, most of them across the border into Austria.
Camp Kilmer
The United States took in tens of thousands of Hungarian refugees, many processed through Camp Kilmer in New Jersey. It was one of the first large Cold War refugee admissions, and a model for those that followed.
