Camps and Way Stations
Dadaab, Kenya
A complex of camps near the Somali border that has sheltered Somali refugees since the early 1990s.
Fleeing the civil war
When Somalia's government collapsed in 1991, hundreds of thousands of Somalis crossed into Kenya. The camps at Dadaab, in northeastern Kenya, were set up to receive them.
One of the largest in the world
Dadaab grew into a complex of camps and at its peak was among the largest refugee settlements in the world. Generations of children have been born and raised there.
