Andreas Lowenfeld was born in Berlin to a German Jewish family of physicians and came to the United States as a refugee from Nazism at the age of eight.

He spent more than five years in the Department of State's Office of the Legal Adviser in the 1960s, where his work included the legal questions raised by the Cuban Missile Crisis. He went on to become one of the leading scholars of international law at New York University.
